Why Some Concrete Garages Can Be Moved
Unlike a garage built from blocks or poured concrete, a sectional garage is assembled from individual reinforced concrete panels. These panels are joined together during installation, making it possible in some cases to dismantle the structure in sections.
The panels are extremely heavy and need suitable lifting, handling and transport equipment. The work should not be approached as a simple DIY dismantling project.
What Should Be Checked Before Relocation?
An inspection should establish whether the main components are in a suitable condition to be removed and reused. Important checks include:
- cracks, movement or damage in the concrete panels
- corrosion or deterioration affecting fixings and reinforcement
- the condition and material of the roof sheets
- whether the door, windows and fascias can be removed safely
- access for lifting equipment and transport vehicles
- whether replacement seals, fixings or roof components will be needed
- the effect of relocation on any remaining manufacturer’s guarantee
Older or damaged garages may cost more to dismantle and repair than they are worth. Long-distance transport can also make a replacement garage the more practical option.
A New Concrete Base Will Usually Be Required
The existing concrete base normally remains in place, so the destination will require a suitable foundation of its own. The base must match the garage dimensions and be level, square and capable of supporting the structure.

What Does the Relocation Process Involve?
A typical project may involve:
- inspecting and measuring the existing garage
- checking access at both locations
- preparing a correctly sized base at the destination
- removing doors, windows, roof sheets and other fittings

- reassembling the structure with suitable replacement fixings and seals
- checking the completed garage for alignment and weather resistance
Some components may not be suitable for reuse. Fragile roof sheets, worn fixings, damaged fascias and old seals may need to be replaced during the work.
Check for Asbestos Before Dismantling
Some older garage roofs contain asbestos cement. The material must be identified before work starts because disturbing or breaking the sheets can release asbestos fibres.

Will Planning Permission Be Required?
Moving a garage elsewhere on the same property still involves placing a building in a new position. It may fall within permitted development rights, but this depends on its height, location, intended use and the type of property.

Is Moving the Garage Worthwhile?
