Garages can quickly become crowded with tools, bicycles, seasonal decorations and items that have nowhere else to go. With a sensible storage system, however, you can reclaim valuable floor space and make everything easier to find.
Before buying new storage, empty the garage and decide what should be kept, donated, sold or disposed of responsibly. Once you know what remains, you can choose storage that suits the available space.
1. Divide the Garage Into Zones
Group similar items together and give each category a designated area. You might create separate zones for tools, gardening equipment, car care products, sports equipment and seasonal belongings.
Keep frequently used items near the entrance or work area, with Christmas decorations, camping equipment and other occasional items stored further back. Leave clear routes to the main garage door, personnel door and any electrical equipment.
2. Use Shelving and Storage Towers
Stacking boxes directly on top of one another makes the lowest container difficult to reach. A shelving unit or storage tower allows you to remove individual boxes without dismantling the entire stack.
Choose sturdy shelving with a suitable load rating and place heavier items on the lower shelves. Tall freestanding units should be secured where necessary to prevent them from tipping. Clear or clearly labelled containers will also save time when you need to find something.
Avoid placing cardboard boxes directly on the floor, particularly if the garage is prone to damp or occasional water ingress. Lidded plastic containers offer better protection for suitable stored items.
3. Add Lockable Garage Cabinets
Cabinets keep worktops clear and provide secure storage for hand tools, power tools and smaller accessories. Drawers or organisers inside the cabinet can be used for screws, drill bits, fixings and other easily misplaced items.

4. Make Better Use of Wall Space
Pegboards, hooks and wall-mounted rails can hold frequently used tools without taking up floor or worktop space. They are particularly useful for items such as spades, brushes, extension cables and lightweight hand tools.
A folding workbench can also work well in a compact garage or shed and workshop. It provides a useful surface when needed and folds away afterwards.
Before fitting wall storage, check that the fixings are suitable for the wall construction and the weight being supported. Make sure shelves and hooks do not interfere with electrical cables, windows or the movement of the garage door.
5. Store Bicycles Carefully
Bicycles take up a considerable amount of floor space when they are leaned against a wall. A suitable wall-mounted rack can keep them organised while leaving more room for a vehicle, workbench or storage units.
Check that the wall and fixings can support the combined weight of the rack and bicycle. Position the rack so the bicycle can be lifted on and off safely without obstructing a doorway.
Overhead storage can also be useful in some garages, but only where the structure has been designed to carry the additional load. Do not simply lay boards across roof supports or suspend heavy objects without checking the load capacity. Any overhead rack must also allow enough clearance for people, vehicles and moving garage doors.
Plan Storage Around How You Use the Garage
The most effective garage storage system is one that supports how you use the space. A workshop needs accessible tools and a clear work surface, while a garage used for parking requires enough room to open vehicle doors safely.
Start with the items that create the most clutter and add storage gradually. This avoids filling the garage with shelves or cabinets that do not solve the underlying problem.
