If we told you that some of the biggest bands in history started off in a garage, you probably wouldn’t believe us. But honestly, it’s true. In the 1950’s and 60’s, forming a band with your friends and rehearsing in your garage was the antidote to commercially manufactured music – it gave youngsters the excitement, thrill and rawness of proper Rock n’ Roll.
Check out our list below of the greatest bands to start off in a garage.
With over 100 million record sales to date, The Who are one of the most influential and successful bands in rock history, so it’s quite staggering to believe they started off in a garage. Daltrey, Tonwshend and Entwistle all met at school, whilst the late Keith Moon joined shortly after – the quartet are also credited with acts such as the ‘windmill strum’ and the ‘guitar smash’ at live concerts.
Cut short by the tragic death of lead singer Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s journey in the music industry was short and most certainly sweet. The American grunge band have sold over 75 million records and are considered as one of the greatest bands of all time, and with hits such as ‘Smells like teen spirit’ and ‘Come as you were’, it’s easy to see why.
Ray and Dave Davies formed the successful North-London based band in 1963, and with 17 top 20 singles including ‘You really got me’ and ‘Sunny Aftenoon’, they never looked back. Doing what many artists dreamed of, The Kinks broke in to both UK and US charts, writing themselves in to Rock n’ Roll history
The Ramones spearheaded American Punk Rock after their formation in 1974, and all band members adopted the surname ‘Ramone’, without having any relation to one another. The New York band toured excessively for 22 years, performing at over 2000 concerts and have left a lasting influence on the Punk Rock scene.
