Fun facts about garages

At Dencroft, we know a lot of Yorkshire homeowners don’t care too much about their messy garage – but we also know there’s some of you that take pride in them, just like us. That’s because a garage is an important part of any household and because of that we’ve decided to celebrate them!

Here’s some interesting facts about garages that you may not have known:

1) The word ‘garage’ actually comes from the French. Yes, the word ‘garer’ means ‘to shelter’ in France, which led to the birth of the word

2) The first overhead garage door was invented in 1921 by C.G Johnson

3) C.G Johnson also invented the first automatic opener in 1926 – but it would take 40 years to the automated garage door to be common around homes around the world – including here in West Yorkshire

4) The garage was home to the start of some amazing businesses and musicians including The Beatles, Nirvana, Metallica, Apple, Walt Disney, Microsoft, Google and Hewlett-Packard

5) In 1915 the average garage took up about 8% of the square footage of a home – now they take up close to 45% - showing how us Yorkshire folk have taken a real liking to garages in our homes
